The short version, with the third option most LinkedIn-only buyers end up wanting.
How much do Buffer and Hootsuite cost in 2026?
Buffer bills per channel and Hootsuite bills per user seat, so the two price tags aren't measuring the same thing. Buffer keeps a free plan with 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts on each of them, then charges $5 per channel per month on Essentials ($60 a year per channel) and $10 per channel per month on Team ($120 a year per channel). Paid plans come with a 14-day trial, and the Team plan is where unlimited team members, access levels, and approval workflows start.
Hootsuite has no free plan at all. Its public pricing runs $99 per user per month on Standard for up to 10 social accounts, $199 per user per month on Professional for unlimited accounts plus automation and trend forecasting, and $399 per user per month on Advanced for approvals and message routing, all billed annually, with a custom Enterprise tier above that. The 14-day trial needs no credit card, though trial accounts are capped at 10 to 20 posts a day per organisation.
That difference matters more than any feature checklist. If your whole plan is one LinkedIn profile and maybe a company page, Buffer costs $5 or $10 a month and Hootsuite costs $99, and the extra $89 buys a social inbox, listening, and ad tools you may never open. Most of the Buffer vs Hootsuite articles you'll find still quote $149 or $249 for Hootsuite tiers that no longer appear on its pricing page, so check the figures yourself before you sign anything.

How do the three tools compare feature by feature?
Buffer and Hootsuite side by side, with a LinkedIn-only tool as the reference point.
Buffer wins on price and on LinkedIn media support, publishing up to 20 images, a video, a GIF, or a PDF per post from $5 per channel. Hootsuite wins on team operations, adding a shared inbox, social listening, ad management, and approval routing from $99 per user. LinkedGrow wins on the writing itself, with voice training, 30 AI text models through your own API key, and a carousel builder, for $13 a month billed yearly on LinkedIn only.
What can each tool actually publish on LinkedIn?
Buffer publishes more LinkedIn formats than Hootsuite does, and its documentation is specific about the limits. Buffer connects company pages, showcase pages, and personal profiles, but not groups. A single post can carry up to 20 images at 10MB each, one video between 3 seconds and 30 minutes, one GIF, or one PDF up to 100MB and 300 pages. Text caps at 3,000 characters, and a scheduled first comment gets 1,248 on paid plans. Buffer says it can't post LinkedIn polls, publish to the Life tab, restrict the audience to connections only, or report analytics on PDF carousel posts and reposts.
Hootsuite covers the basics and stops earlier. You can attach a PDF to a LinkedIn post and LinkedIn will display it as a carousel, which Hootsuite announced as its PDF feature. Its help centre is blunt about the rest: Hootsuite doesn't support creating carousels, event posts, polls, or articles, and it won't attach any document type other than a PDF. For a team that lives in the inbox and the approval queue, that trade is fine. For someone whose LinkedIn strategy leans on document posts, it's a real limit.
One detail sits behind both tools, and it costs people an evening more often than the pricing does. Uploading a PDF isn't remotely the same job as designing one, because Buffer and Hootsuite will both schedule a carousel you have already built somewhere else, so the slide deck still starts life in Canva, Figma, or a slide editor, then gets exported and dragged in. LinkedGrow builds the deck itself on the Business plan, which is the difference between a scheduler and a content tool. Our LinkedIn carousel templates guide walks through the format if you want to see what a good deck looks like first.
Character limits are the other thing people get wrong when they move between tools. LinkedIn truncates a post after roughly 210 characters in the feed, long before the 3,000-character ceiling, so the opening line does most of the work. You can check any draft against both numbers with our free LinkedIn character counter, whichever scheduler ends up publishing it.
Where do both tools leave you on your own?
The blank post box is still yours to fill
Buffer and Hootsuite have both added AI writing, and both stop at the same line. Buffer's AI Assistant is strongest at reworking something you already wrote, and its free plan limits AI reply suggestions to 5 a week. Hootsuite bundles Wisdom into every tier, and it can draft posts and generate images. Neither one learns how you personally write, because they're serving 11 networks at once and a LinkedIn voice model wouldn't help a Pinterest customer.
LinkedGrow is an AI content platform built only for LinkedIn, aimed at founders, ghostwriters, coaches, and small teams. You paste up to 5 of your own posts and it learns your sentence rhythm and vocabulary, then drafts in that voice with dedicated voice training. That is the piece a general scheduler has no reason to build.
You can't choose the model, or see what it costs
Buffer and Hootsuite both run their AI on a model they picked, priced inside the subscription. You can't swap it, you can't see the per-generation cost, and when a better model ships you wait for their roadmap.
LinkedGrow uses BYOK, or bring your own key. You connect an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Perplexity, or Kimi and pick from 30 text models, including GPT-5.6 Sol, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Grok 4.5, and Sonar Deep Research. Images run through 13 more models across 3 providers. Generation is unlimited, the provider bills you directly, and daily posting usually lands at $2 to $4 a month in API fees.
Everything else in the LinkedIn workflow
Writing a LinkedIn post is more than typing into a scheduler. You need an idea, a hook that survives the 210-character cut, a visual, sometimes a carousel, and a way to tell which version worked. Buffer and Hootsuite handle the last step of that chain and assume you have already done the rest.
LinkedGrow covers the earlier steps instead of only the last one. It pulls ideas from Reddit threads, turns a YouTube video, a blog post, or any web page into LinkedIn drafts through content repurposing, generates hooks on Pro, builds carousels on Business, and runs A/B tests on organic posts so you learn which opening actually earns the click. If you want the scheduling side compared on its own, our LinkedIn scheduling tools breakdown ranks 8 options including both tools on this page.
So which one should you pick?
Three honest answers, including the one where we lose.
Choose Buffer when you post to several networks on a small budget
Buffer is the cheapest honest way to keep LinkedIn, Instagram, and a couple of other accounts on a schedule. The per-channel model means a freelancer with 3 channels pays $15 a month on Essentials and can drop a channel the moment a client leaves. The free plan is also genuinely usable for testing, which Hootsuite no longer offers at any level. Our full Buffer comparison goes deeper on where it runs out of room.
Choose Hootsuite when a team answers messages, not just publishes them
Once several people share the work, the $99 seat starts to make sense. Hootsuite gives you one inbox for every network, message routing to the right teammate, listening on Professional and above, paid ad management, custom reports, and approval flows on Advanced. Buffer has no answer to social listening or ads at any price. Agencies running customer care for brands are the audience Hootsuite is built for, and our Hootsuite comparison covers what that seat price includes.
Choose neither when LinkedIn is the only network that pays you
Plenty of people arrive at Buffer vs Hootsuite while managing exactly one LinkedIn profile. Paying for 10 networks you don't use is the wrong trade, and neither tool helps with the part that takes the time, which is writing something worth reading. LinkedGrow costs $13 a month billed yearly, writes in your voice, and does nothing for Instagram on purpose. If you also weigh up the enterprise suites, the Sprout Social comparison covers the same trade-off at a higher price point.
