How does LinkedIn Boolean search work?
Five operators do almost all the heavy lifting. LinkedIn parses them in the keywords field of any people search.
Narrows results. Both terms must appear in the profile. AND is also implied when you separate terms with a space.
Widens results. Any one of the terms can match. Always wrap OR groups in parentheses so LinkedIn parses them correctly.
Excludes results. Use NOT to remove recruiters, students, or anyone else cluttering your search.
Locks an exact phrase. Without quotes, LinkedIn may match each word separately. Use quotes for any title or skill that is 2+ words.
Groups logic. Without parentheses, LinkedIn reads left to right and ignores your intent. Parentheses are mandatory for complex queries.
Do I need Sales Navigator for Boolean search?
Short answer: no. Boolean works on the free people search. Sales Navigator adds filters and removes the search cap.
| Feature | Free LinkedIn | Sales Navigator |
|---|---|---|
| Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT, quotes, parentheses) | Yes, in the keywords field | Yes, in keywords and filters |
| Monthly search limit | Commercial use limit hits heavy users | Unlimited searches |
| Filter by current and past company | Yes, basic filter | Yes, with logical operators |
| Filter by seniority, function, years in role | No | Yes |
| Save searches and get alerts | No | Yes |
| See who viewed a company page | No | Yes |
| Price | Free | From $99/month |
For most solo founders and small teams, free LinkedIn plus disciplined Boolean queries is enough. Upgrade to Sales Navigator only when you hit the search cap or need seniority and function filters.
How do you turn search results into replies?
A great Boolean query is the start. The reply rate comes from the content on your profile and the first message you send.
1. Define the exact person
Write down the job title, seniority, industry, and location of your ideal customer. Specificity beats volume - a list of 50 perfect prospects converts better than 500 random ones.
2. Build your Boolean query
Use the builder above. Add title synonyms with OR, narrow with AND, exclude recruiters with NOT. Test the query and read the first page to make sure the people are right.
3. Warm up before outreach
Most people check your profile before replying. Make sure your headline, banner, and recent posts speak to your prospect. LinkedGrow's AI post generator helps you stay consistently active.
4. Reach out with proof
Send a connection note that references something specific from their profile. Once accepted, follow up with an outreach message that solves their actual problem - not a pitch.

LinkedIn Boolean search lets you combine keywords with operators like AND, OR, NOT, parentheses, and quotes to filter LinkedIn's people search beyond the basic search bar. It is the same logic recruiters and sales teams use to find very specific job titles, companies, or skill combinations. Anyone with a LinkedIn account can use it for free.
