A/B Testing

Test different versions of your LinkedIn posts to discover what resonates best with your audience using LinkedGrow's A/B testing.

What is A/B Testing?

A/B testing lets you compare two versions of a LinkedIn post to see which one performs better. You create two variants - Variant A and Variant B - with different content, hooks, formats, or calls to action. LinkedGrow tracks the performance of each variant so you can make data-driven decisions about your content strategy.

A/B testing is available exclusively on the Business plan.

Why A/B Test Your Posts?

Small changes in your LinkedIn posts can have a significant impact on engagement. A/B testing helps you understand:

  • Which opening hooks grab more attention
  • Whether shorter or longer posts perform better for your audience
  • Which calls to action drive more comments and shares
  • How different formatting styles affect readability and engagement
  • Whether certain topics resonate more with your followers

Instead of guessing what works, you can test and know for certain.

Creating an A/B Test

To create a new A/B test:

  1. Go to the A/B Testing section in the left sidebar
  2. Click New Test
  3. Enter a descriptive test name (for example, "Hook comparison - question vs. statistic")
  4. Write the content for Variant A in the first editor
  5. Write the content for Variant B in the second editor
  6. Click Create Test

Both variants should be similar enough to isolate the variable you are testing. For example, if you want to test two different hooks, keep the rest of the post content identical.

Note: Only team owners can create A/B tests. Team members with the Admin or Member role cannot create or manage tests.

Test States

Every A/B test goes through these states:

Draft

The test has been created but is not yet running. You can still edit both variants at this stage. No data is being collected.

Running

The test is live. Both variants have been published or scheduled, and LinkedGrow is tracking impressions and engagement for each one. You cannot edit the variants while the test is running.

Paused

You can pause a running test at any time. Data collection stops, but all previously collected data is preserved. You can resume the test to continue collecting data.

Completed

The test has enough data to determine a winner, or you have manually marked it as complete. The results are finalized and you can review the performance summary.

Tracking Performance

While your test is running, LinkedGrow tracks key metrics for each variant:

  • Impressions - how many times each variant was viewed
  • Likes - the number of likes on each variant
  • Comments - the number of comments on each variant
  • Shares - how many times each variant was shared
  • Engagement rate - total interactions divided by impressions

You can view real-time results in the A/B Testing dashboard. Each variant displays its metrics side by side for easy comparison.

Determining the Winner

LinkedGrow determines the winning variant based on overall engagement rate. The variant with the higher engagement rate (likes + comments + shares relative to impressions) is declared the winner.

You can also manually choose a winner if you want to weigh certain metrics differently. For example, you might value comments more than likes for a particular test.

To complete a test and declare a winner:

  1. Open the test from the A/B Testing dashboard
  2. Review the results for both variants
  3. Click Complete Test
  4. Select the winning variant (or let LinkedGrow choose based on engagement rate)
  5. Click Confirm

Best Practices for A/B Testing

  • Test one variable at a time - if you change the hook, format, and CTA all at once, you will not know which change made the difference
  • Give tests enough time - allow at least a few days for each variant to accumulate meaningful data
  • Keep a record - note what you learned from each test to build a knowledge base of what works for your audience
  • Test regularly - audience preferences change over time, so continuous testing helps you stay relevant
  • Apply your learnings - use winning patterns in your future content

Managing Tests

From the A/B Testing dashboard, you can:

  • View all active, paused, and completed tests
  • Pause or resume running tests
  • Delete tests you no longer need
  • Filter tests by state or date
